diy, diy knitting, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Halloween costume, headband, kid dress up, knitted bear ears, stockinette stitch

We made these for our Halloween costumes last year.  Ada was Goldilocks and we were the Three Bears.  Baby bear Josie had knitted ears sewn onto her wool suit and Chris and I wore these ears.  The kids now use them for dress-up and they are easy to make if you have minimal knitting skills.  You will need:

*Brown Yarn.  (I used less than half a ball of scrap for each set).  If you want two-toned ears use one color for front and one for back.

*Knitting Needles. (I used size 6)

*Stuffing

*Pipe Cleaners – Two per set

*Fabric-covered Headband

*Needle and Thread

1. Knit up ear shape in Stockinette.  (I am in no way qualified to write a knitting pattern, but this is really easy to do if you know how to increase and decrease).  I began by casting on about 10 stitches, increasing for a few rows on each side when I reached the middle of the ear and then decreasing for a few rows on each side as the ear looked to be about the right size.  I bound off with about 6 stitches at the top.  Ears will be knitted in two pieces and then sewn together.

2. Repeat above until you have four of the same pieces- two fronts and two backs.  If you are making two-toned ears you should have two of each color.

3. Sew front and back of ears together, leaving the bottom open for stuffing.

4. Bend pipe cleaner into half circle, insert into ear and trim ends so they are not sticking out.  This will keep the ears from flopping.

5. Stuff each ear.

6. Sew ears onto headband, pushing stuffing up inside as you go.

Grrrrrrrrr.

I need to use tricks to get Ada to wear winter clothes.  These tricks usually involve the color pink, but she loves this scarf and will wear it without a fuss.  I mentioned this pattern briefly last winter, but it is that time of year again.  The Polar Bear Scarf is such an easy project that there is still time to make one up before Christmas morning.  I used this scarf pattern pattern by Pat Feeley for High Country Knitwear, available for download for $1.  I modified the pattern slightly and used a cashmere blend yarn to make it super soft.

Here are some more super-cute kids’ knits:

*Abbey from Aesthetic Outburst posted about these adorable hedgehog mittens, available as a kit from from Morehouse Farm Knits.  Morehouse Farms has more Critter Knits here.

*Elephant Scarf Elephant Scarf at Acorn Toys is soft and friendly.

*Sweet William has a sweet and warm alpaca pullover by Oeuf with bunny ears here.

Halloween is serious business around here.  The girls have been dreaming up, planning and changing their minds about costumes for months now.  I have been spending a crazy amount of time thinking about tulle and glitter.  This real-time blog tends to post our costumes later in the month because we spend most of October in costume construction mode.  We have been using Pinterest boards to amass images and ideas this year.  Ada and I are pretty addicted to Pinterest and the girls want to look over the boards whenever they get a turn on the computer.  Here is our Domestic Space Halloween Board.  Any guesses about this year’s costumes?

Here are some DIY costume ideas from prior Halloweens:

I promise we will post this years costumes as soon as we get them finished.  Hooray for Halloween!

Mitten Bowl

A bowl near the front door helps keep mittens, hats and scarves organized.  The kids can help take care of their own things when they come in from outside, and you will always know where mittens are on your rush out the door.

We found this vintage Pyrex bowl at a stoop sale, but they abound on Ebay.  The scarf pattern is adapted from one by Pat Feeley for High Country Knit Wear.  You can also find super cute animal scarves at Acorn Toys in Brooklyn if you are more of a shopper than a DIYer.
