We have fallen in love with a magic little town on the coast of New Jersey.  Chris and I drove through Ocean Grove one day and were charmed by the tiny square mile of preserved Victorian homes perched close to the shore.  The houses were impossibly detailed and cared for and the town was beautiful, quiet and slow-paced.  The beach in Ocean Grove was voted one of the world’s 15 best by Fodor’s Travel.  A quick stroll on the boardwalk or over two footbridges brought us to newly revitalized Asbury Park.  We joked that we would have to retire there when our kids were grown.

When I learned about the town’s twice annual Giant Flea Market I marked my calendar.  The drive from Brooklyn took me less than 1 1/2 hours and the first time I went to the flea I was hooked.  Wandering around town felt like a dream and each time I visited I liked it even more.  When I returned to the flea this past May I called Chris to tell him I was going to talk to a realtor.  In the whirlwind that followed we ended up looking at 10 houses.  Our plan was to find a house that we could rent when we weren’t using it.  The house we fell for was built in the 1880s and was owned by one family for more than 70 years.   After talking to many incredibly friendly residents we decided Ocean Grove would be the perfect spot to spend time with our girls while they are still young.

The house at 6 1/2 Heck Avenue is calm bright and airy.  It stands fifth in from the beach and has beautiful ocean views.  Many of the home’s original antiques are in use throughout the house.  The town of Ocean Grove was founded by a group of religious leaders as an ocean side retreat in the 1860s.  Our home feels like stepping back into Ocean Grove’s early days when families would escape to the shore away from busy lives.  The home is simple compared to some of its brightly painted neighbors and we love that it retains its original details and quiet beach cottage feel.  Visit our Instagram feed  @oceangrovehouse for more photos.

We are honored to be able to care for the home at 6 1/2 Heck Avenue and excited to share it for 2016 rentals.  For rental inquiries and questions please contact Alfredo Fresnedo at (732)-763-2961, alfresnedo@yahoo.com.  We still feel like we discovered a secret hideout every time we visit our home in Ocean Grove.  So many memories have been made in the short time we have owned the house.  We are so happy to share our home with visitors and hope 6 1/2 Heck will be a place for memories of your own.

SwingAnnHamiltonCarouselHappy New Year’s Eve!  I hope you are spending the evening in your favorite way – be that at a party or in a quiet place away from the crowds.  We are off to spend the night with friends in a few hours.  Ada is planning her outfit and I am feeling just a little thankful to not have to clean up tomorrow morning.  Our New Year’s Eve party last year was a fun way to celebrate our first year in this new house.

We are celebrating our one year anniversary here at Domestic Space!  Thank you to all of you who follow along with our lives and projects.  We love your enthusiasm and ideas and comments.  We are excited to make the next year in this space even better and we’ve have been working on lots of new ideas.  We hope you enjoy!

We spent yesterday with friends doing some things that make me love living here in New York.  If you are in the area, be sure to visit Ann Hamilton’s installation at the Park Avenue Armory.  The Armory is amazing on its own, and the addition of huge swings and billowing sheets of silk has made the space magical.  We also made our first visit to Jane’s Carousel since it survived Hurricane Sandy.  (We discovered that our friend Jen used to ride the same horses as a child when they were housed at their original location in Ohio).  We were thrilled to find the horses in almost perfect shape above ground.  (The organ is being repaired and the live music has been replaced by cd’s until March).  The carousel’s protective box is warm and sunny on a winter day.

Cheers to 2013!

These felted wool coasters keep liquids off the table and are by far baby Josie’s favorite toys.  The patterns are knit in the round and then shrunken and felted in the washing machine.  It is a lovely way to use up the ends of yarn balls and fun to see the circles transform in the machine.  The wool felt makes them waterproof and they are easy to hand wash when need be.  These are adapted from Chris de Longpre’s free pattern at Knitting at KNoon Designs. Hooray for free knitting patterns!

Christmas Cards, Collage, holiday cards, Kids, Organizing, Project

We have finally taken down the holiday cards from the mantels.  Instead of throwing them away, I like to cut out the images for Ada to make into collages.  The finished pieces are great as thank you cards too (if you haven’t yet gotten around to those).

Ada got some clay for Christmas because I was so tired of cleaning up little bits of dried playdough from our socks.  She also got a pair of scissors to practice cutting in one of her new Kumon books.  When I went upstairs yesterday I found this.  She had quietly been cutting little pieces of clay with the scissors and putting them into a box in order to make these intricate little flowers.  Proud Mama.

Chris and I are still pretending we can have nice furniture and children at the same time.  But it has been three years, and I haven’t yet refinished our dining room chairs.  I found the pattern for these beautiful knitted Spiral Seat Cushions in Joelle Hoverson’s More Last-Minute Knitted Gifts.  The book is amazing and full of easy knitting projects.  Joelle founded Purl Soho– one of the best knitting, sewing and crafting stores in Manhattan.

This project is great to do when you have kids around, as you can easily pick up where you left off. The cushions hide a multitude of sins on our chairs and they are easy to hand wash after Ada’s dinner in a big-girl chair.

Sparkle Jar

If Ada had her way everything we own would be covered in glitter.  So we came up with our own version of the snow globe.  Kids can help choose the buttons, glitter and fabric for the tops and then fill the jars with treasure.  Messy and hot parts should be left to an adult.

You will need:

*Recycled glass jar with tight-fitting lid

*Waterproof contents: (buttons, bouncy balls, glitter, and small plastic animals work well)

*Hot glue gun

*Fabric and string to cover top

1. Put treasure in jar and then squirt in baby oil to fill.

2. Line inside rim of jar with hot glue and screw on.

3. Fill outside ridge between top and jar with hot glue, to be sure no oil will escape.

4.Cover top with fabric and tie with string.

The baby was mesmerized by the slowly falling sparkles and the jars are beautiful in the sunlight.  Glitter contained.  Magic.

Vanilla Sugar

We made vanilla sugar for holiday gifts.  It is a super easy recipe that kids can help with.

You will need:

*Vanilla bean, one per jar

*Sugar

*Recycled jar

Place vanilla bean into jar, using a funnel let the kids pour in the sugar.  The vanilla will infuse into the sugar and make it delicious.  The kids can decorate custom labels- we got blanks from Papersource.  The gift tags are made from Elmer’s glue and glitter on office supply manilla hang tags. Be sure to let them dry before tying on.

The sugar is great for coffee or baking, and you can add new sugar to the jar as you use it.   We love ours in pancakes!

New year, new fridge art

Kids, vintage

The fridge our house came with is dotted with rust and missing a handle.  Ada’s art, on large paper makes it so much better.  We are searching for the perfect vintage refrigerator and stove for the kitchen.  But the search is on a long list of home projects, so we will happily update the gallery for the time being.  The magnets are felt letters we made- more on that project to come.
