winterwhitesWe have a bunch of new listings up in our Etsy shop.  These pieces are great for brightening up cloudy winter days:

* Antique Ironstone Tureen – Has a lovely blue tint, octagonal shape and was made around the 1880s.  The tureen is still sturdy and ready to be used again.

*Five Vintage Children’s Pillow Cases – Each has a different handmade detail.

*Set of Unused Vintage Linen Tablecloth and Napkins – These ten napkins and tablecloth still have their original “Made in Belgium”labels and are made of beautiful quality linen.

*Paint-by-Number Winter Scene – The colors of this little painting are bright and calm.

SuitcaseWe are always on the hunt for the perfect vintage furniture for the house.  The bedroom search list includes bedside tables, a lamp for Ada’s room, wall sconces…But for now we’ve employed this little vintage suitcase to hold the lamp and water glasses.  It is just the right height and can be quickly converted back to its original self when Ada needs a suitcase to carry to Nan’s.  Vintage suitcases are abundant at flea markets.  Etsy has some cute choices here.  Be sure to check inside linings if you plan to use the case for storage.  A stack of vintage child-size suitcases also makes a good storage/table option.

NecklacesMy late great-grandmother gave the best gifts.  She would show up to every family event with brown paper grocery bags full of vintage costume jewelry, old toys and flowery hats.  I remember a particularly amazing pin that contained a real bee encased in clear resin.  The bee horrified the adults at the dining table but I thought it was beautiful.  Gram was an incurable yard sale addict and she never paid much money for any of the treasures, but they were always my favorite gifts.  She seemed to know what would be magic to us little girls.  As woman who survived the Great Depression with three young children, I am sure she enjoyed being able find and give these treasures to her great-grandchildren.  I found a bunch of inexpensive costume jewelry on Ebay and have been putting them in a box for Christmas for my girls.  (Here are a few listings).  Maybe I should wrap them in a brown paper bag.

Here are a few other posts about Gram and things her thriftiness has inspired:

Ebay, Elephant's Trunk Flea Market, glass drawer pulls, headband crowns, home, kids rooms, shopping, vintage, vintage basket, vintage furniture

Happy October!

My friend Leslie and I spent a kid-free morning yesterday at The Elephant’s Trunk Flea Market.  (Thanks Dads!)  It was a beautiful fall day, despite a few sprinkles, and the leaves had just started changing colors in Connecticut.  We both found some great stuff and had a lovely lazy morning wandering around.  I am still jealous of the bright blue and red umbrella Leslie scored!  Flea markets are my favorite way to spend a morning.  I love nothing more than wandering around and getting ideas, thinking of new ways to use old things, and finding inspiration.  Here are my finds:

Ironstone butter pats – also great for holding small jewelry or marbles, spices when cooking, or for mixing watercolors.  Ebay has some here.  (The opal glass is for Ada’s collection).

Glass drawer pulls in various sizes.  You never know when you will need the perfect set!  I am putting the small set on Ada’s dresser today.  The rest will be saved for future projects.  Etsy has some here.

Balsa hat form.  I went specifically to the flea for this and found the perfect one for $25.  I love it when that magically happens!  I am using it to photograph my headband crowns for my opening-soon Etsy store.

Giant wicker basket.  I love this thing!  I bargained it down to $35, and had no idea what I would do with it.  I was thinking of maybe using it for a laundry basket, or blanket storage, or towels, or maybe a future baby bed…It seemed to grow when it got into the trunk of our car and by the time I got it home it seemed really big.  Ada and Josie saw it and begged to put it in their room as a ‘nest’.  They have been reading books and snuggling bears in there.  I am still not sure where it will end up, but it is good in the corner of their room for now.  This figuring out the perfect use for something that was once loved by someone else is exactly why I love the flea market.

Brimfield for Mother’s Day

Oh Brimfield, how I love you.  You never know what you will find there in the mix of strange and beautiful things and wandering around looking at antiques for hours is my idea of Heaven.  I get such inspiration from the design and quirky ingenuity of objects from the past.  The materials are often more beautiful and sturdy after 50 years than things for sale in stores today.  Thanks to my in-laws, I got an early Mother’s Day gift:  an entire day wandering the rows and rows and fields and fields of antiques with Chris and without children.  Despite the rain, and only a few small purchases, it was a wonderful day.

My List of Favorite Mother’s Day gifts so far (in no particular order):

*Unexpected flowers at my desk at work when I was first pregnant with Ada.

*Big bunches of cut peonies, lilac, lilies and iris – delivered by Ada in her pjs.  Chris got her up early, went to the market, and then left me alone to put them all in vases as he and Ada cooked pancakes.

*Brimfield with my love, who walked around for hours in the rain and pretended to be as excited as I was about all of the treasures.

What is on your list of best gotten or given gifts?

Here are some photos from the day:

Organizing, vintage

We stripped off 100 years of paint before we moved in, and there is still cleaning to do.  Why would anyone paint over marble?  Ada’s group of three metal statues.  Aunt Sandy told us it is good feng shui for a horse to be running out of a room.  We aren’t sure about whales.

New year, new fridge art

Kids, vintage

The fridge our house came with is dotted with rust and missing a handle.  Ada’s art, on large paper makes it so much better.  We are searching for the perfect vintage refrigerator and stove for the kitchen.  But the search is on a long list of home projects, so we will happily update the gallery for the time being.  The magnets are felt letters we made- more on that project to come.

Paperwhites, vintage

Paperwhites and amaryllis planted in our vintage pots, some strange seeds Ada found at the playground and our ‘Happy cat’.  I love these pots, and the green growth in the middle of winter brings me an insane amount of happiness.  Ada always helps me plant and then checks the progress every morning.  Our saved morning glory seeds will take the place of paperwhites in the spring.

Bed-Stuy, Dough Brooklyn, Kids, vintage

Ada, Christmas morning digging into some Dough doughnuts in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn. Dough

(I literally walked a mile to Dough when my water broke with Josie.  After one of their amazing lemon meringue doughnuts we were ready to have a baby!)  I love Dough.
