HeckInsta

We have fallen in love with a magic little town on the coast of New Jersey.  Chris and I drove through Ocean Grove one day and were charmed by the tiny square mile of preserved Victorian homes perched close to the shore.  The houses were impossibly detailed and cared for and the town was beautiful, quiet and slow-paced.  The beach in Ocean Grove was voted one of the world’s 15 best by Fodor’s Travel.  A quick stroll on the boardwalk or over two footbridges brought us to newly revitalized Asbury Park.  We joked that we would have to retire there when our kids were grown.

When I learned about the town’s twice annual Giant Flea Market I marked my calendar.  The drive from Brooklyn took me less than 1 1/2 hours and the first time I went to the flea I was hooked.  Wandering around town felt like a dream and each time I visited I liked it even more.  When I returned to the flea this past May I called Chris to tell him I was going to talk to a realtor.  In the whirlwind that followed we ended up looking at 10 houses.  Our plan was to find a house that we could rent when we weren’t using it.  The house we fell for was built in the 1880s and was owned by one family for more than 70 years.   After talking to many incredibly friendly residents we decided Ocean Grove would be the perfect spot to spend time with our girls while they are still young.

The house at 6 1/2 Heck Avenue is calm bright and airy.  It stands fifth in from the beach and has beautiful ocean views.  Many of the home’s original antiques are in use throughout the house.  The town of Ocean Grove was founded by a group of religious leaders as an ocean side retreat in the 1860s.  Our home feels like stepping back into Ocean Grove’s early days when families would escape to the shore away from busy lives.  The home is simple compared to some of its brightly painted neighbors and we love that it retains its original details and quiet beach cottage feel.  Visit our Instagram feed  @oceangrovehouse for more photos.

We are honored to be able to care for the home at 6 1/2 Heck Avenue and excited to share it for 2016 rentals.  For rental inquiries and questions please contact Alfredo Fresnedo at (732)-763-2961, alfresnedo@yahoo.com.  We still feel like we discovered a secret hideout every time we visit our home in Ocean Grove.  So many memories have been made in the short time we have owned the house.  We are so happy to share our home with visitors and hope 6 1/2 Heck will be a place for memories of your own.

Chris has been begging me to knit him a sweater for years now. I am sure I will get to his sweater one of these days, but there are so many sweet knitting patterns for children to get through while our kids are still small…This is one of my favorites:  The Lyalya Hoodie ABC Pattern.  The pattern comes with directions for ages six months-adult.  I knitted this one up in Brooklyn General Store’s cashmere.  I splurge on this amazing yarn once in a while and it is the softest, most beautiful yarn I have ever knit.  (Even the letter-pressesd label is gorgeous).  I made Ada a couple of hats made from the yarn and they still look beautiful after years of use.  Lyalya’s pattern knits up quickly and it is fun to watch the ribs build as you go.  The result is a snuggly hat that does not require tying on to a wiggly three-year-old.  The cashmere is so soft that scratchy-hat whining is completely avoided.

Comforter
One of our favorite gifts from Santa this year was this spotted linen PS 2012 Ikea duvet cover.  (Yes, Santa and Ikea do work together at times – see our DIY Teepee post).  I was looking for something that would make it easy for the girls to make their own beds and these covers are so pretty and bright.  The multi-colored dots make our white bunk beds look so cheery.  There may be lumps of stuffed friends under the covers, but the girls have been sleeping soundly and then making their own beds in the mornings.  (Here is the post for this cute little DIY Stuffed Bunny Toy).

Tights2 Ada started a school with uniforms this year. I have gotten used to it now, but the first week I cried while I hung up her colorful summer clothes on the line.  Luckily, Wovenplay makes sweet screen-printed, (more or less) uniform-compliant socks and tights.  And luckily, they are cute enough to make a child smile instead of groan when she opens socks on Christmas morning.

We have been busy listing some new floral finds on our Etsy shop.  I love these metal Toleware flowers!  They were made in the 1940s and 1950s, often in Italy.  They were inexpensive at the time, and the colors are still vibrant today.  The hooks would be adorable in a child’s room.

Books
Ada has been sounding out words and making up stories to go along with her books for a while now.  Her teachers suggested we have her point to some words as we read to her.  I pulled out our copy of Go, Dog. Go! and she surprised me by reading/guessing a lot of the pages.  After secretly shedding a few tears I dug out our pile of I Can Read it All By Myself Books.  These are still some of the best books we own.  Go, Dog. Go!, Snow, Hop on Pop…So many good ones!  I love that she is reading the same words Chris and I first deciphered when we were just beginning.  We are so excited for her to join the world of reading!

I finally finished this yoked cardigan for Dare. I bought the Knitbot pattern and Quince & Co Lark Wool (in Frost) at Knitwit in Portland Maine earlier this year.  I started working on the little sweater on vacation in August…and finished in October.  The pattern is super quick to work up, but babies and life have a habit of using up many knitting hours.  The Yoked Cardigan is just in time for a chill in the air, and Dare’s increasingly round belly.  Two sweaters down, and one more for me to finish the three I’d planned to complete by her predicted August birth.Sweater2Sweatet1

Osage Orange Season

Osage
It is my kids’ favorite time of year to visit the park.  The leaves are changing colors, the chestnut trees are dropping their bounty and there are plenty of squirrels to chase.  But our favorite treasures to hunt in early autumn are osage oranges.  These strange fruits are inedible, but have a sweet smell and their color is other-worldly.  We have started our yearly osage collection on the dining room table.  Their citrus fragrance fills up the room and their bright florescent color just happens to be in vogue this year.

Apples2Apples
We went on our annual apple picking trip this weekend.  It was a warm and misty day and we all got soggy feet, (except Josie who insisted on wearing her rain boots when we left our sunny neighborhood).  We went to Fishkill Farms, which has been in the same family for almost 100 years.  They make an effort to use low or no pesticides on their crops.  The farm is huge and packed with lots of apple varieties in the fall.  I got a little nervous at the crowds near the entrance, but there was lots of room to spread out once we got inside.  We were able to drive our car on the road along the orchards and many families brought tailgate picnics for the day.  We picked a huge bag of apples and then headed South to the village of Tarrytown for lunch.  Fishkill Farms has great barbecue food, but the weather and crowds had us in the mood to be inside.  Tarrytown has lots of cute restaurants and antique shops and our friends introduced us to Mint, which was amazing.  It looks like we are heading for a storm today here in Brooklyn.  It is a perfect day for staying inside and baking apple pie.
