Osage
It is my kids’ favorite time of year to visit the park.  The leaves are changing colors, the chestnut trees are dropping their bounty and there are plenty of squirrels to chase.  But our favorite treasures to hunt in early autumn are osage oranges.  These strange fruits are inedible, but have a sweet smell and their color is other-worldly.  We have started our yearly osage collection on the dining room table.  Their citrus fragrance fills up the room and their bright florescent color just happens to be in vogue this year.

advent calendar, Christmas gifts, Christmas with kids, fall, home, homemade gifts, Oh Happy Day!, Seasons, winter, You Are My Fave

We are half way between pumpkins and snow here.  Ada finished her last piece of coveted (and formerly forbidden) Halloween candy today and moved directly into making Christmas decorations.  A mysterious box arrived in the mail from Aunt Laurel, containing a full advent calendar in the shape of a stuffed elf that is as big as the girls.  Aunt Anna came up with the idea of filling and mailing the advent calendar to a different member of our family each year and Ada is completely intrigued by the elf’s full pockets.  There are lots of beautiful advent calendar ideas on the blogs this year – Oh Happy Day and You Are My Fave have some great ones.  The change in the season always brings on a flurry of making around here.  We have surrounded ourselves with yarn, glitter, felt and fabric and are excited about secret gift plans.  What are you getting excited about for the upcoming season?

We started fall off with apple picking and antique shops this weekend.  Chris found this giant pumpkin at Sun High Orchards after we picked 20 pounds (!) of apples.  I am excited to perfect a maple apple jam recipe with them this week.  The girls went on their first pony rides at the farm and Josie did not want to share her pony with any of the other kids waiting in line.  I scored a pair of vintage juice glasses decorated with fall leaves (for $.99 each !).  Ada found this crown at the last antique shop and decided it could live on the pumpkin when not on her own head.  There is officially a chill in the air today.  Welcome Autumn!

The tomatoes from our CSA are especially good this year. I feel like I haven’t had such good tomatoes in years. I love tomatoes that straddle two seasons – collecting the sun of summer but not ripening until the air feels a bit cooler. Some days I long for our own vegetable plot and other days I am thankful for someone else doing the hard work of tending the garden. Tomatoes don’t last long at our house. (I had to edit out some thieving little hands from the photo). Our favorite way to enjoy tomatoes are in this sandwich: Bourbon Wheat Bread from Scratch Bread, some good cheese, thin slices of our pickles, and thick slices of tomatoes. Yum!

Flower, made by Ada from bouncy balls.

Sleeping Dolls. Gram brought these dolls from Spain. Ada made them beds from hankies after carefully removing their shoes.

It is the last weekend before school starts for Ada. She goes for a longer day this year. I am looking forward to some time alone with Josie. We are planning to make more trips into the city this year. I used to take Ada to museums a lot when it was just the two of us. Josie is often under the shadow of her energetic big sister. I am excited to see how she does with a lot of solo Mama time…But I know we will both be looking forward to picking up our Ada from school at the end of the day.

How are you changing your routine for fall?
