PartyAnimials1Hat3Hat2HatWe have been planning to make the animals some felt party hats for a while.  Now that the holidays are over and the weather is gloomy the animals are ready for a party.  We loved these paper party hats from Oh Happy Day!  We wanted to make our hats a little more durable for play so our version uses felt, glue and elastic thread.  Ada made the flag banner in the background with color chips and a hole punch.  To make your own Mini Felt Party Hats you will need:

*Card Stock or Paper for Pattern

*Assorted Felt

*Mini Pom Poms

*Scissors

*Needle and Thread

*Glue

*Elastic Thread (We used 9mm)

1. Using the pattern above, cut out felt shapes to fit your animals.

2. Stitch two straight edges of felt together.

3. Stitch pom pom on top and tie thread.  (I pushed the needle up through the top of the hat and then through the pom pom).

4. Using the needle, bring elastic thread through two sides of hat and tie knots inside.  Adjust per animal as needed.

5. Squirt glue inside hat, spreading evenly along the inside.  Allow hat to dry on its side, being careful not to squish the hat out of shape.  The glue will cause the felt to stiffen as it dries, making it more durable.

6. When hats are dry, dress the animals and bake a cake!

advent calendar, Christmas gifts, Christmas with kids, fall, home, homemade gifts, Oh Happy Day!, Seasons, winter, You Are My Fave

We are half way between pumpkins and snow here.  Ada finished her last piece of coveted (and formerly forbidden) Halloween candy today and moved directly into making Christmas decorations.  A mysterious box arrived in the mail from Aunt Laurel, containing a full advent calendar in the shape of a stuffed elf that is as big as the girls.  Aunt Anna came up with the idea of filling and mailing the advent calendar to a different member of our family each year and Ada is completely intrigued by the elf’s full pockets.  There are lots of beautiful advent calendar ideas on the blogs this year – Oh Happy Day and You Are My Fave have some great ones.  The change in the season always brings on a flurry of making around here.  We have surrounded ourselves with yarn, glitter, felt and fabric and are excited about secret gift plans.  What are you getting excited about for the upcoming season?

I first read about Tail of the Yak on the Oh Happy Day! blog.  Jordan described it as her favorite store, (which is saying a lot because her blog is so lovely).  I was so excited to visit on a trip out West last week. The tiny store has been in the same spot for 40 years, and it was even better than I had imagined.  It is magical and beautiful and ethereal. ..Here are some treasures:Tiny Glass Flowers and Birds, $8 per bunch.  I have been making child-sized crowns and these will be perfect for them. Little Metal Bird Pins, $.75 each.  Cheap and adorable!Leaf and Star Straight Pins, $4 each.  This packaging is almost too amazing to use them, but I can’t wait to start a sewing project!  I also think they would be perfect on a bulletin board.

I am missing the West Coast already!
