Happy Friday and Happy Spring!

I think I saw our tulip shoots push up another inch or two yesterday. I need to get out back and remove my over-zealous straw mulching from the fall.  This is our second year of growing a garden and we get very excited when plants actually grow out back.  I think I even see the start of flowers on one of my hellebore plants, which everyone else in our neighborhood seems to be able to grow except us thus far…Maybe this is our year.  One of our bee hives was bringing in lots of pollen this week.  I am so amazed that those girls know when and where to find the tiniest bit of pollen in the otherwise gray landscape.  I need to take a peek inside and see if we need to feed a bit more before the flowers really start providing nectar.  We are keeping fingers crossed for a warm weekend.  Hooray for Spring!

Splatter2

I ran upstairs to wrap presents for Josie the other day and realized that although we were well-stocked with holiday paper, we were fresh out of anything appropriate for a birthday.  Dare was napping, so I had a few minutes of quiet to get creative.  This splatter paper took me less than ten minutes to make and I was happy the results.  To make your own Watercolor Wrapping Paper you will need:

*Roll of Blank Paper (We used a roll from Ikea that is for the girls’ easel)

*Watercolor or Acrylic Paints

*Medium-sized Paint Brush

*Water

1. Unroll paper.

2. Mix paint and water until it is the desired color. (The more water you use, the fainter the color will be when dry).

3. Splatter the paint on to the paper with the brush.  Change water and wash brush between color changes to keep paint from looking muddy.

4. Allow paint to dry.

5. Wrap!  Seam binding is my favorite gift-wrapping ribbon.Splatter3Splatter4Splatter6

Hello and happy First Week of the Year!  I hope you are all weathering the crazy cold in a cozy spot.  We have been staying warm inside, and staying busy posting new vintage finds in our Etsy shop.  (I am having a really hard time not sneaking the two sets of juice glasses into our own cabinets).  I will be putting up new listings this week, so stay indoors and keep checking back for fresh treasures!

One of our favorite gifts from Santa this year was this spotted linen PS 2012 Ikea duvet cover.  (Yes, Santa and Ikea do work together at times – see our DIY Teepee post).  I was looking for something that would make it easy for the girls to make their own beds and these covers are so pretty and bright.  The multi-colored dots make our white bunk beds look so cheery.  There may be lumps of stuffed friends under the covers, but the girls have been sleeping soundly and then making their own beds in the mornings.  (Here is the post for this cute little DIY Stuffed Bunny Toy).

Happy 2014!

I hope you all are having a wonderful new year so far.  We have snow here on the East Coast and it feels all cozy and wintery around here.  Here are some recent Instagrams:

*Back Yard Snow

*Dare Inside the Fort (Long lengths of tulle are perfect fort building material)

*Sleepy Dare (The New Native Sling is still our favorite piece of baby equipment after five years.  It knocks my girls out every time, and folds up to fit in a diaper bag)

*Shrinky Dinks! (I had totally forgotten about these until Aunt Laurel gave Ada some for her birthday – so fun!)

*Bunk Beds

*Big Girl Dare

Have a great rest of your weekend!

Andrea Elliott, Brooklyn, Dasani, family, home, homeless child Brooklyn, homeless children, LIttle Essentials, NY Times homeless children

Houses

I finished Andrea Elliott’s chronicle of the life of a homeless child in Brooklyn one morning in bed, snuggled next to two of my sleeping children.  I had begun reading the night before, on my phone while feeding the baby.  I quietly shuttled Ada out the door to school and then snuck back under the covers and prayed for the two little ones to stay asleep so that I could finish.  Many of you have likely read the piece by now.  It ran in the New York Times last week.  The piece is so beautifully written.  Dasani’s story is haunting, and both so far and so close to our own life here in Brooklyn.  It broke my heart and has followed me around since I finished the story.  I often wonder how to talk to my children about how lucky we are, and what our good fortune means in a city where the rich and poor live pressed up against one another.  We struggle with how to teach charity and compassion to our girls, without condescension.  Little Essentials is an organization that directly reaches families with homeless children in Brooklyn.  They have been overwhelmed with donations since the article was published, but they still need donations of money and time.  We are planning to work with them in the upcoming year.

Books For a Snowy Day

Snow
Snow!  This week has brought the first real taste of winter to Brooklyn.  All of a sudden it really feels like the holiday season and the kids are excited about decorations and treats to come.  We are decorating the tree, making the gingerbread house and taking the two big girls to The Nutcracker this weekend.  I dug out the winter books and we snuggled in to watch the snow fall this morning.  These are three of our favorite snow stories, which also make perfect holiday gifts for kids:

*Snow by Roy McKie (This book’s bright illustrations and happy story make it as fun to read today as when I was a kid).

*The Mitten by Jan Brett (The beautifully detailed drawings bring a Ukrainian folk tale to life).

*The Hat by Jan Brett (Inspired by a true story of a hedgehog.  Both The Hat and The Mitten feature vignettes on each page which hint at events to come as the story unfolds).

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Flea Market Finds: Bluebirds

My Gram had collections of these happy little blue birds.  I remember them scattered on linens and dishes and tea cups.  The motif became popular in 1934 when this song was played in homes across the country.  The lyrics reminded people to look on the brighter side, stay positive and to find peace in the knowledge that happiness was on the horizon.  This must have been a welcome message for a country still struggling with the remnants of the Great Depression.  The little birds make me smile.  I recently found the lot of bluebird linens and they are for sale in our Etsy shop.  Our own collection of bluebirds reminds me of my great-grandmother and how life must have been for her when she was my age.  Some days we all need a reminder of how lucky we are.
