We started fall off with apple picking and antique shops this weekend.  Chris found this giant pumpkin at Sun High Orchards after we picked 20 pounds (!) of apples.  I am excited to perfect a maple apple jam recipe with them this week.  The girls went on their first pony rides at the farm and Josie did not want to share her pony with any of the other kids waiting in line.  I scored a pair of vintage juice glasses decorated with fall leaves (for $.99 each !).  Ada found this crown at the last antique shop and decided it could live on the pumpkin when not on her own head.  There is officially a chill in the air today.  Welcome Autumn!

Instagrams from the Outer Banks, North Carolina:

*Child’s spelling game at the Beachcomber Museum, Nags Head.  (This amazing space housed Nellie Myrtle’s treasures from 60 years of early morning beach combing in the Outer Banks).

*Surfboards.

*Ivin’s Famous Spiced Wafers.  (I got these boxes purely for the packaging with no idea of the contents, but they ended up being delicious spicy  ginger snaps.  They are perfect for making mini ice cream sandwiches).

*Bright Plastic Boats, Nags Head.

*Fishing Lure Collection from the Beachcomber Museum.

*Parachute with Nan and the Cousins.

Have a lovely weekend!

Chris came home one morning in Cape May with some of this Fralinger’s salt water taffy.  The vintage packaging alone made me ecstatic.  This video tells the story of the origin of Salt Water Taffy and the family business that keeps the original alive today.  The taffy flavors include: Banana, Chocolate, Lemon, Licorice, Lime, Molasses, Molasses Mint, Orange, Peach, Peanut Butter, Peppermint, Root Beer, Spearmint, Strawberry, Teaberry, and Vanilla.  Hooray for the perfect vacation souvenir!

The beach at Nag’s Head, NC was covered in tiny shells.  The kids spent one morning gluing collected shells onto little wooden picture frames.  We used our mini Fuji camera to add a photo.  Ada decided this one was my birthday gift, and it was just what I wanted.  To make your own shell frame you will need:

*Small Shells

*Wooden Picture Frame

*Elmer’s Glue

*Photograph

1. Wash sand from shells and dry thoroughly.

2. Have children glue shells to frame.

3. Glue in your favorite photograph and allow to dry.

4. Bring home the beach.

Baked, Brooklyn, Cape May Ferry, Cape May NJ, Fairway, family vacation, Nags Head NC, travel, vacation with kids, victorian mansions

We just got back from two lovely weeks of beach vacation.  We have never gone on family vacation for that amount of time and it was pretty perfect.  We went to Nags Head, NC with family for the first week where we had Nan and Pappy and cousins to entertain the kids.  The second week we drove and took the ferry to Cape May, NJ to spend time with five families that we have know since Ada was three months old.  Cape May is a beach town full of beautiful Victorian mansions and bed and breakfasts.  We were right on the beach in Nags Head and the kids spent most of the days in the sand and warm water.  Our Cape May house was a five bedroom Victorian two blocks from the ocean.  We spent a lot of time on the porch rocking chairs with the kids playing around us.  All of us are back home now, happy to be back in Brooklyn and excited about the change in the summer air since we’ve been gone.  We are trying to hold on to that easy summer feeling as long as we can.  We made a run to Fairway and Baked yesterday and I was reminded how much I love it here!
*Drying clothes on the porch.  (Inside out so the sun doesn’t fade colors).

*Pink Nags Head sunrise.  (We woke Ada up early for it and walked on the beach when it was light).

*Morning surrey ride on the boardwalk in Wildwoods, NJ.
What was your best summer vacation?

Shell boxes that were Ada’s great-grandmother’s. We gave them to Ada for her birthday. She has filled them up with her own treasures. Similar boxes can be found here. Or, you could make some of your own with lots of tiny shells and patience.

Metallic silver paper lanterns in the dining room for Ada’s birthday week.  We got them at the Tail of the Yak.  They have a little metal holder for a candle inside, but I am not quite brave enough for that in this old house.

Birthday Stencil

I can hardly believe that four years ago at this time we had just said goodbye to our midwife, ordered Indian food and sat staring at our brand new sleeping baby girl.  We were ecstatic and exhausted and in love.   The house was quiet and felt magical and full and we were suddenly no longer just a couple, but a family.   That Indian food was the best meal I have ever eaten.

I found this Indian chalk stencil (Chalk na dabba) at Tail of the Yak a few months ago.  I remember these stencils on doorsteps when I visited India.  They are usually amazing floral designs stamped out with colored chalk (chuna).  The stencils are punched out by hand on recycled tin.  I love the magic made from the most humble materials.  We filled ours with baking powder this morning and stamped along our front steps while Ada was out with Daddy.  She was quite pleased to find the little trail of birthday wishes up the steps and insisted on sitting out there in her birthday dress to let the neighbors know who owned the day.

Details from Old Sturbridge Village, Sturbridge, MA

I recently began playing around with Instagram on my IPhone and I am loving the results.  The images are very similar to old Polaroids and the format is a square.  In my opinion, everything looks better framed in a square.  I only paint square paintings and when I sold my greeting cards, they were all on square stock.  I love a square.  Instagram has gotten me excited about starting a new feature here.  I am going to start posting a regular Inspiration Category each Friday.  The photos will be details from the week.  I hope this inspires you to find beauty in your daily routine just as we try to do.  Enjoy!

Brimfield for Mother’s Day

Oh Brimfield, how I love you.  You never know what you will find there in the mix of strange and beautiful things and wandering around looking at antiques for hours is my idea of Heaven.  I get such inspiration from the design and quirky ingenuity of objects from the past.  The materials are often more beautiful and sturdy after 50 years than things for sale in stores today.  Thanks to my in-laws, I got an early Mother’s Day gift:  an entire day wandering the rows and rows and fields and fields of antiques with Chris and without children.  Despite the rain, and only a few small purchases, it was a wonderful day.

My List of Favorite Mother’s Day gifts so far (in no particular order):

*Unexpected flowers at my desk at work when I was first pregnant with Ada.

*Big bunches of cut peonies, lilac, lilies and iris – delivered by Ada in her pjs.  Chris got her up early, went to the market, and then left me alone to put them all in vases as he and Ada cooked pancakes.

*Brimfield with my love, who walked around for hours in the rain and pretended to be as excited as I was about all of the treasures.

What is on your list of best gotten or given gifts?

Here are some photos from the day:
