My kids love stringing beads and making necklaces.  These pony beads are large enough for little fingers to grasp, and are a good exercise for fine motor skill development.  I originally put sets of beads and leather cord inside our Easter surprise balls this year.  The leather cord can be knotted on one end when stringing and then simply tied when necklace is complete.  We decided to make this set as a gift for a friend.  These kits would also make great party favors.  To make your own Beaded Necklace Gift Kit you will need:

*Variety of Pony Beads, Sequins and Other Beads with Large Openings

*Leather Cord to Fit Bead Openings

*Small Clear Plastic Envelopes

*Wooden Box

1. Open large packages of beads, place a few into plastic envelopes and seal.  We organizing our beads by color and shape.

2. Measure and cut lengths of leather cord and wind into circle.  Be sure cord is long enough to fit over child’s head when the ends are tied.  (Or you could also make bracelets).  Put into envelope and seal.

3. Place plastic envelopes into wooden box.

4. Wrap up the Necklace Kit or place into party favor bags.

5. Have fun beading!

My family goes a little crazy with the Easter gifts.  So Chris and I don’t usually get much for the girls’ Easter baskets.  I had a rather unsuccessful trip to Ikea the other day when my search for a lampshade and trash can turned up nothing.  But I did find a little Easter gift for the girls for under $20.  This Duktig Coffee and Tea Set is my favorite for the kids’ play kitchen.  Ada has broken a lot of the pieces over the years, so a replacement set will come in handy.  The tray is the perfect small size and paper coasters are always useful for a place setting of wooden food.

*Duktig Coffee/Tea $9.99

*Barbar Tray $5.99

*Skitsel Coasters $.99/10

It hardly seems like spring is on its way today, with snow showers in the air.  But these bright colors are making me dream of green grass and Easter egg hunts.

NecklacesMy late great-grandmother gave the best gifts.  She would show up to every family event with brown paper grocery bags full of vintage costume jewelry, old toys and flowery hats.  I remember a particularly amazing pin that contained a real bee encased in clear resin.  The bee horrified the adults at the dining table but I thought it was beautiful.  Gram was an incurable yard sale addict and she never paid much money for any of the treasures, but they were always my favorite gifts.  She seemed to know what would be magic to us little girls.  As woman who survived the Great Depression with three young children, I am sure she enjoyed being able find and give these treasures to her great-grandchildren.  I found a bunch of inexpensive costume jewelry on Ebay and have been putting them in a box for Christmas for my girls.  (Here are a few listings).  Maybe I should wrap them in a brown paper bag.

Here are a few other posts about Gram and things her thriftiness has inspired:
