One of my favorite things to search for at flea markets are vintage serving platters.  These always remind me of my great-grandmother.  We have a collection of various sizes and patterns at our house, none of which match.  Most of our flea market platters were under $10 and we use them for everything from holding string cheese in the refrigerator to corralling beads for craft projects .  I love the quirky patterns from the 1930’s and 40’s.  So cheery!  Ebay has some vintage serving platters here and Etsy here.

Clothesline2Clothesline1Clothesline3
I have been dreaming of a clothesline for the back yard.  I really love the process of hanging washed clothes outside and bringing in fresh-smelling dry clothes.  (Not to mention the benefits of not running a dryer in the the summer).  I was a bit afraid that Brooklyn laundry would not smell as clean as New Hampshire laundry, but I am happy to report that the sun and wind do a great job here as well.  We found a vintage retractable line on Ebay.  There are some more Ebay examples here.  Technically our line is for indoors, and will likely need some chrome retouching each season and we plan to take it inside for the winters.  I replaced the old cotton rope with nylon to fit across the span of the back fence.  We unwind the rope to dry and attach it a hook on the opposite end of our fence. Every evening we wind the rope back into its shiny metal case.  It is so lovely to sleep on sheets that have spent the day in the sun.

NecklacesMy late great-grandmother gave the best gifts.  She would show up to every family event with brown paper grocery bags full of vintage costume jewelry, old toys and flowery hats.  I remember a particularly amazing pin that contained a real bee encased in clear resin.  The bee horrified the adults at the dining table but I thought it was beautiful.  Gram was an incurable yard sale addict and she never paid much money for any of the treasures, but they were always my favorite gifts.  She seemed to know what would be magic to us little girls.  As woman who survived the Great Depression with three young children, I am sure she enjoyed being able find and give these treasures to her great-grandchildren.  I found a bunch of inexpensive costume jewelry on Ebay and have been putting them in a box for Christmas for my girls.  (Here are a few listings).  Maybe I should wrap them in a brown paper bag.

Here are a few other posts about Gram and things her thriftiness has inspired:

Instagrams from the week:

*Colored Leaves from Our Walk Home

*Beautiful Packages at H Mart

*Josie Sleeping in Boots She Refused to Take Off (Studio Bimbi boots were an Ebay find when Ada was her size.  I cry every time I dig out the hand-me-down shoes that Josie has grown into.)

*Josie, Sleeping in Her Shoes (These Gusellino shoes were another Ebay bargain.  The Italians make the best kids shoes!)

*Rain on the Screen

*Dinosaur Pumpkins at Blaze (This was our first visit and the kids had a great time spotting all of the spooky and beautiful animals.  Ada especially loved the butterfly forest.)

Vintage Finds: Globe Banks

5 gallon water jug, antique shop, Brooklyn NY, Ebay, geography kids, globe, globe bank, kids saving money, Travel with kids, vintage globe

We picked up this little pair of vintage globe banks at a Brooklyn antique shop this weekend for $10 each.  These banks are small- about 5″ tall and a good start to an inexpensive collection.  Ebay has quite a few globe banks listed here.  I love that they combine saving money and geography.  Banks used to hand these sort of globes out to kids to promote saving, (presumably in the institution stated once the globe was packed with pennies).  Our girls usually put extra change in our big glass jug by the front door.  Maybe these globe banks will be the start of their savings to travel the world.

Autumn means the rainy season in these parts.  Thus begins the yearly search for the perfect rain boots for the girls.  I found these on Ebay last week.  They are from Korea and were on sale for $10 with free shipping(!)  Korean designs are so cute!  I love this smart use of gingham fabric stretched under the waterproof rubber.  Why didn’t I think of that when I was designing shoes?

Ebay, Elephant's Trunk Flea Market, glass drawer pulls, headband crowns, home, kids rooms, shopping, vintage, vintage basket, vintage furniture

Happy October!

My friend Leslie and I spent a kid-free morning yesterday at The Elephant’s Trunk Flea Market.  (Thanks Dads!)  It was a beautiful fall day, despite a few sprinkles, and the leaves had just started changing colors in Connecticut.  We both found some great stuff and had a lovely lazy morning wandering around.  I am still jealous of the bright blue and red umbrella Leslie scored!  Flea markets are my favorite way to spend a morning.  I love nothing more than wandering around and getting ideas, thinking of new ways to use old things, and finding inspiration.  Here are my finds:

Ironstone butter pats – also great for holding small jewelry or marbles, spices when cooking, or for mixing watercolors.  Ebay has some here.  (The opal glass is for Ada’s collection).

Glass drawer pulls in various sizes.  You never know when you will need the perfect set!  I am putting the small set on Ada’s dresser today.  The rest will be saved for future projects.  Etsy has some here.

Balsa hat form.  I went specifically to the flea for this and found the perfect one for $25.  I love it when that magically happens!  I am using it to photograph my headband crowns for my opening-soon Etsy store.

Giant wicker basket.  I love this thing!  I bargained it down to $35, and had no idea what I would do with it.  I was thinking of maybe using it for a laundry basket, or blanket storage, or towels, or maybe a future baby bed…It seemed to grow when it got into the trunk of our car and by the time I got it home it seemed really big.  Ada and Josie saw it and begged to put it in their room as a ‘nest’.  They have been reading books and snuggling bears in there.  I am still not sure where it will end up, but it is good in the corner of their room for now.  This figuring out the perfect use for something that was once loved by someone else is exactly why I love the flea market.

I found this lamp, in a sorry state for $10 at our local junk/treasure shop.  I loved its lines, but in needed some work.  (This was before Chris and I made our “No More Projects” vow to each other.  We both have lifetimes worth of projects and are trying to limit the new ones walking in our door…I am really bad at keeping this vow, but just for the record so is Chris).  This particular project involved rewiring with a vintage-look fabric cord, spray painting with this matte metallic, scoring a perfect glass torchiere shade for $3 at a stoop sale, replacing the candle sleeves and all four bulbs.  (If you are going to do your own lamp rehab and don’t feel confident wiring, you can purchase cord and bring it to a lamp repair shop).

We are both really happy with how the lamp turned out and it makes such pretty light now in the dining room. Kind of makes me give the junk shop projects a long second look…

Juice Glass Love

antique shop, Ebay, Etsy, juice glass, kitchen shelves, life with kids, shopping, Swanky Swigs, vintage glass, vintage juice glass

I love vintage glasses.  We have a large collection in daily rotation, and they brighten up even the most boring beverage.  I especially love these tiny juice glasses (the stars, tulips and gingham in the photo), called Swanky Swigs.  The small Swigs from the 1930s and 40s make cheery little wine glasses.  I had a collection of them long before the kids, but they turned out to be the perfect size for little hands.  We have dropped our fair share, and it always brings a little pang when a favorite hits the tile floor…but I generally won’t pay more than $4 per glass, and a space on the shelf is a reason to go explore an antique shop.  We are planning the future kitchen shelves around the collection.  Etsy has a sweet collection of vintage glasses here.  Cheers!

1971 Simplicity pattern, diy sewing, Ebay, Etsy, Simplicity 9395, summer sewing, The Sound of Music, toddler pattern, vintage curtain, vintage fabric

This easy project is from a vintage Simplicity Pattern, #9395.  The fabric is from Ebay, and I suspect was once a curtain.  (Who remembers that scene from The Sound of Music?  I loved that movie when I was little).  This pattern for toddlers is great because it can be worn three ways and is nice and airy for summer weather.  And, when else can you make your child wear a curtain?
