Flea Market Finds: Vintage Down Pillow

PillowThis pillow is one of my favorite vintage finds in the kids’ room.  It is stuffed with feathers, covered in pretty vintage stripes, and the perfect size for a little head.  I throw the whole pillow in the washer and dryer as needed.  This vintage find is much nicer than most child-sized pillows I’ve seen, and it was only $10!  Etsy has some pretty examples here.  Sleep tight.

1971 Simplicity pattern, diy sewing, Ebay, Etsy, Simplicity 9395, summer sewing, The Sound of Music, toddler pattern, vintage curtain, vintage fabric

This easy project is from a vintage Simplicity Pattern, #9395.  The fabric is from Ebay, and I suspect was once a curtain.  (Who remembers that scene from The Sound of Music?  I loved that movie when I was little).  This pattern for toddlers is great because it can be worn three ways and is nice and airy for summer weather.  And, when else can you make your child wear a curtain?

Pinwheels made from vintage fabric for headband crowns.  I found a big box of cut circles at a flea market and the prints were perfectly bright and preserved.  I remember a quilt made from these at my Gram’s house when I was little.  Yesterday Chris took the kids for the day and left me to a quiet house and NPR Podcasts and production.  So lovely!  I am working during the kids’ naps and between art projects to get lots of crowns done before Renegade in June.  I love a project!

We have been longing for warmer days and our Friday forecast calls for sun and 80 degrees.  This bubblesuit from a 1971 Simplicity pattern (#9395) is perfect for a toddler in summer weather.  I think my sister had a similar one when she was little. The vintage fabric is from Ebay – I love the abstract bright figures.  You can find similar ones on Etsy here.  Be sure to check the quality and yardage when you are buying vintage fabric.  This Simplicity pattern also comes with a matching pinafore- so cute!  I’ve made a few versions of both from different fabrics and they are some of our favorite warm weather outfits.

I’ve been excited about making these headband crowns for kids lately.  Yesterday we found out that my friend Marissa at Soor Ploom and I got into Etsy’s Brooklyn Renegade Craft Fair.  Hooray!  We will be selling our children’s clothes and crowns on June 23 and 24 in Willamsburg.  I’ll put up more details as the weekend gets closer.  For now I need to get crafting!

(The crowns and Soor Ploom’s sweet clothes are also both available at Acorn Toys if you can’t wait until June).

Cherry Blossom T

american apparel, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, cherry blossoms, cherry trees, fabric circles, fabric scraps, Hanami, organic t-shirt, pinking shears, spring, t-shirt, tulle, vintage buttons, vintage fabric

The cherry trees are just starting to bloom at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.  The festival is not until April, but it is exciting to visit each week and watch the progress.  We made this T-shirt in their honor.  You will need:

*Blank T-shirt (we used a child’s American Apparel T.  They have great organic options too).

*Fabric

*Tulle

*Buttons

*Pinking Shears

*Needle and Thread

1. Cut fabric and tulle into circles with pinking shears.  We made 1 inch circles from vintage fabric scraps.

2. Layer fabric and tulle slightly off-center.

3. Place circle layers onto shirt with button on top and stitch down through button holes.

Hand wash, or turn shirt inside out to launder.  Hooray for Spring!
