GiftsArt supplies are one of my favorite gifts for kids.  I try to keep a supply on hand for birthday gifts and moments of desperation.  These Kid Made Modern art supplies by Todd Oldham for Target occupy a large section in our emergency party box.  The quality is great and I love the Kid Made Modern packaging and smart, thoughtful art kits.  This Construction Zone block of paper has lots of great colors and patterns and different weights of paper.  The Mini Colored Pencils are perfect for little hands and the colors are beautiful.  I recently added these paper tapes from the Target office section to our arsenal.  The tapes come in packs of four and are $4 per pack.  My kids can spend hours tearing and sticking paper tape (exhibit A here).  It is good to be prepared.

Art supplies and books are my favorite gifts for kids. We decided to organize this birthday gift around a color theme, and then continue the theme onto the wrapping paper.  (Check out the You Are My Fave blog’s ‘in the box’ section for beautiful themed gift inspiration).  Our color gift includes Seasons by Blexbolex and Pantone Colors – both beautiful, color-centric books.  (I selfishly buy books I love for kids).  We also used the Todd Oldham for Target Kid Made Modern watercolor set so our birthday girl could create her own color masterpieces.  To make your own colorblock wrapping paper you will need:

*Brightly Colored Tissue Paper

*Double-stick Tape

*Scissors

1. Fold tissue paper in half.  Place a strip of double-stick tape along the folded seam.

2. Place a folded, contrasting color of tissue paper along the tape and press to stick.

3. Cut tissue to fit gift.

4. Wrap each gift with different color combinations, put a strip of tape between each and stack.  Tie with a ribbon.  We added some star-filled bouncy balls from Target.  Enjoy!

The weather has been tricky here the last few weeks.  The skies start blue and quickly turn to dark thunder clouds on our way out the door.  Ada got crafty on the box from our grill while she was stuck inside.  She used six rolls of tape and then kept going.  We had a bunch of the Kid Made Modern Todd Oldham tape and the $6.99 price tag was totally worth the two hours she spent constructing the fort.  Not a Box by Antoinette Portis is one of our favorite books, and great inspiration for box imaginings.  To make a tape fort of their own, your kids will need:

*Cardboard Box.  A large one for a kid-size fort, or smaller box for a stuffed animal lair.

*Paper Tape.  We used the Target tape, but colorful painter’s or washi tape also work well.  Just be sure kids can tear it by hand and they won’t need scissors.

*Glitter, Paint, Markers, Clips, Cardboard Tubes, Crayons, etc. for decorating.

1. Help open one side of the box so the child can sit inside.

2. Hand over the tape and stand back.

Rainy day saved!

The new Todd Oldham for Target line of kids’ art supplies is in stores!  I had it on my calendar for yesterday and I think I may have been the first one to discover the pile in our local Target.  All of the Kid Made Modern pieces are under $20 and the packaging and bright colors make them perfect gifts.  I love the craft kits that designer Todd Oldham came up with: diy painted wooden blocks, board book, felt flowers…His fun aesthetic translates perfectly to kids’ products.  My mom always had a secret closet stash of gifts and I love being prepared.  Art supplies are the best!
