Here are our finished Fairy costumes for Halloween.  The wing construction how-to is posted here.  Initially I was going to sew costumes out of tulle, like some of the vintage ballet costumes on our Pinterest board.  But after some experimenting I realized altering some of our existing dress-up clothes would work better.  These two dresses are old shirts.  I altered and added shorter straps to the green dress and made slits up the sides of the gold dress to allow a tulle skirt to fit underneath.  We used this tutorial from wikiHow to make a simple no-sew tulle skirt similar to this one:Tutu1
The skirts are super easy to make and only use a ribbon and strips of tulle.  I ended up making a second tutu to match the wings.  Both will end up in the dress-up clothes after Halloween.  I wrapped strips of tulle around a headband for Ada’s hair.  I wondered how sturdy the wings would be, but our double layer of pantyhose survived nicely through the first of our Halloween celebration this weekend.  Fairy2
We managed to finish the costumes with a whole week to spare, and Josie seems to have finally stopped changing her mind about what she wants to be for Halloween.  Fairy1
Trick or Treat!

Ada decided she wanted strawberry cupcakes with strawberry icing for her party.  We found this recipe for Sprinkles Strawberry Cupcakes on the Nancy Creative Blog via Pinterest.  (Ada and I searched for the cupcake image we liked best and then looked up the recipe).  I substituted soy for whole milk and they came out great.  We baked the cupcakes the night before and stored the frosting in the fridge until the morning of the party.  I had these same ballerinas for my fifth birthday party and I still remember shopping for them at the party store with my mom.  We found these dancing ladies on Etsy at Pink Lemonade Party Shop.  Lisa’s Etsy shop is full of amazing party supplies (my favorite!) and she is having a sale through August 9, 2013.  My mother-in-law had given me an Etsy gift certificate for Christmas, so we stocked up on cute party supplies for free (my favorite!)  I am still eating the last of the cupcakes from the fridge and wondering what excuse I can come up with to bake another batch.

I think this baby is making me start my nesting behavior early. I am not due until August, (please oh please make it July!), but I frantically spent a week making skirts and dresses for Ada and Josie before we went on vacation last month.  I really wanted to make a dress out of the little bit of Liberty print I’d found on sale at Brooklyn General, and with some creative piecing managed enough for Josie’s dress.  Ada’s dress is made from a a vintage purple violet print that I still have yards of after these projects (amongst others): 1, 2, 3.  (That violet print was $10 well spent!)  The design for this sundress was inspired by this beautiful Makie version from Acorn Toys in Brooklyn.  (Feel free to peak at my Pinterest boards for more children’s clothing inspiration).  I played around with this pattern from Fabshophop.com for a simple pillow case dress and added an elastic gather around the chest.  I love these kind of easy dresses.  They are great as long dresses for little girls and can become a top as they get taller.  Hooray for summer dresses!

I love Pinterest.  It is a guilty pleasure of mine that I admittedly don’t have enough time for.  (Here are my sparse Pinterest boards).  As much as I love the online version, I cannot let go of good old-fashioned magazine tears.  I love the tactile quality of ripping out pages and I love cutting out and collaging the images together.  I collect photos from the pages of Martha Stewart Living, Country Living, Anthropologie catalogs, Domino, Blue Print, Martha Stewart Weddings, etc. etc and paste them into large blank sketch journals.   I think my idea for these books came from the amazingly obsessive collections made by my great-grandmother.  (I will post on Gram’s books soon).  I have used the images from my books as inspiration boards when I worked in fashion, as reminders of how I want our home to look when going out to a flea market,  and as idea pages for styling work.  But most of the time I just enjoy flipping through the pictures and getting inspired.

*Sorry for my lack of image credits above.  Unlike with Pinterest, I don’t keep my sources credited in my books.  I will be happy to credit any images if you drop me an email!*

Happy collecting!
