We started making these collages with Ada when she was first learning her colors.  I was having trouble explaining subtle differences in shade and tone to a two-year-old.  Why is green so many different colors?  Should I really make a toddler try to say chartreuse?  I decided to have her help define what falls under a color’s given name.  We laid out a pile of collage scraps, Ada picked out pieces for one color at a time and then glued them to a white square.   She has continued making the collages and I love the little compilations that have come out of the project.  (I don’t think I would have thought to add the sticky side of masking tape to the “tan” collage, or to glue down metal chain to the “yellow”).  The squares make a pretty sort of quilt when hung up together.  They are even fun to make on your own if you don’t have kids.  To make your own Color Collage you will need:

*White Card Stock (Ours were 5″ X 5″ squares)

*Craft Glue

*Collage Materials (fabric, string, paper, glitter, buttons, etc).

*Crayons, Markers, Colored Pencils, etc.

1. Pick a color for the first collage.

2. Find collage scraps that match the color.

3. Glue down scraps to card stock.

4. Color with markers or crayons.

5. Repeat with other colors.

6. Allow glue to dry.  Hang up collages on their own, or group them together on a wall.

We came up with this wand decorating project as an activity for Ada’s birthday party.  I had planned to have the kids decorate birthday hats, but Ada thought making wands would be more fun.  She was right.  My kids have been running around the house with them for the last two weeks. To make your own Magic Star Wands you will need:

*Cardstock Stars (We got ours at Michaels Crafts, but you could also make your own)

*Wooden Dowels

*Wide Clear Tape

*Craft Glue

*Scissors

*Ribbons (We used seam binding)

*A Variety of Glitter, Sequins, Feathers, Stickers, Etc.

*Paper Plates to Hold Decorations

1. Tape star to dowel.

2. Spread out decorations on paper plates.

3. Using craft glue, allow kids to attach decorations to star.

4. Tie ribbons around dowel.

5. Put wands in a safe spot until dry.

CrayonsThere is nothing quite as perfect as a pristine box of Crayolas, but little hands tend to snap the thin crayons quickly.  Josie will sit for an hour peeling the paper wrappers off of Ada’s crayons, (thus instigating a big fight).  This is our little kid crayon box – the shapes and sizes work better for smaller hands and they are all less breakable than the classics.

*Crayon Rings  ($5.99 for 6)

*Short Crayons (Similar to ours – $5.99 for 12)

*Stubby Crayons (Similar to ours – $7.99 for 18)

*Animal Crayons ($11.49 for 12)

*Crayon Necklace ($10.50)

Ada brought this down for me the other day.  She made it out of modeling clay and Wikki Stix and paper and a toothpick and I think I see some of my hair wound in there.  It reminded me why we are so lucky to live here.  There is art everywhere in New York.  I don’t do enough museums lately with the double stroller, but I am counting the days until we can get back to it.  (Yes, I was one of those crazy people who dragged my two-year-old to the Alexander McQueen show).  I love that our kids are so close to art here – and music, and dance, and food, and people…I Love NY!
