Rack

I found this rack for $8 at an antique shop in Northwood, NH.  We weren’t sure what it was originally used for, but the color and price were right.  (It is genetically impossible for me to pass up a bargain with potential).  Our upstairs bathroom has a funky layout with no space for hanging towels, so Chris added some hooks and hung the pegboard on the wall above the tub.  Some days we have to hold ourselves back from digging under the old floors in this house and knocking down walls with our hammers.  (What the heck is under the tile that completely encases the clawfoot tub upstairs?)  Other days we can make peace with the slow renovation of an old house, one dependent on time and money we don’t always have right this minute.  Some days we can be happy with an $8 towel rack, and move on with life for the time being.

Happy Halloween!

It has been a dramatic and scary week for many of us here on the East Coast. We are thankful our family and friends are safe and that our home weathered the storm, and our hearts go out to those who were not so lucky. We spent a night upstairs Sunday sleeping away from tree the branches creaking and bending outside the windows. Chris and I were up late listening to the wind and hoping for the best during our first real storm in this old house. Ada and Josie jumped ecstatically on the feather bed we’d put down for them as we adults tried to look brave. This week also had our family waiting out a frightening but ultimately successful medical scare. We are so thankful that all is going well with our sweet cousin and niece. Both the storm and the surgery are now becoming the past and healing is starting. The last week makes me want to hug my girls and remember how lucky we are, and what a luxury it is to be able to take that for granted. Chris just left with the girls in their costumes for a Halloween party. They are off on adventure of first trick-or-treating and have quite forgotten about the scares of the past few days. I am happy to be here alone for the moment, in an empty and now quiet house, feeling thankful.

One of our Brimfield scores was an addition to our ironstone soap dishes.  These heavy utilitarian dishes are my favorite for the bathroom sinks.  They were often made for hotels and are sturdy and useful.  I love that they are each aged to a different mellow white.  Now we just need to find the perfect sinks to go with them:  I am dreaming of a heavy porcelain double basin farm sink for the kitchen, a pedestal for one bath and aged marble for another.  Slowly, slowly this home will be found in pieces and assembled to our liking.  Some days it is hard to be patient, but I know it will be worth the wait.  We are enjoying the hunt for the perfect treasures and trying to listen to what house has to tell us about our plans.

Wisteria and Violets

Chris was cleaning up in the back yard this weekend and found Wisteria in bloom!  We had it on our planting wish list, and there it was.  We must have missed it in August when it was done flowering and surrounded by the overgrown jungle in the back yard.  It has opened up all across the neighbor’s back shed and grown two stories up into the trees.  We can see the purple blooms from all of the back windows in the house.  Who planted it there?  The vine looks old.  Who were they?  Who planted the tiny purple violets in the yard that exactly match the ones on the old teacup that I use every morning?  Someone cared about this place a long time ago.  We are excited to uncover more about the lives that went on here before us.
