Found Marbles

back yard, back yard garden, cedar fence, fence building, found marbles, garden, marbles, plants, soil sifting

We have been doing a lot of work in our back yard, in hopes that the girls can get out there next year.  (When we moved in, we mistakenly told them they could play outside before we realized how much trash and glass and creepiness was back there).  About a month ago we replaced the chain link fence with a cedar one, had an overgrown (15 ft!) shrub cut down and ripped out the strange metal carport that someone installed as an awning.  Chris has devised and built an amazing soil-sifting contraption that fits over the wheelbarrow and he has been slowly working through the rich, but trash-filled soil that was the former back yard.  He has come across so many marbles in his sifting!  We found a few marbles poking out of the ground when we first started looking back there, but digging has unearthed so many more.  We are up to 37 now, which we keep in a glass in Ada’s room.  Marble hunting has become a sport at our house.  We wonder where they all came from.  Were they put there to decorate a garden?  Left by kids playing?  I love the mystery of an old house…

This sweet little elephant vase was one the favorite gifts we were given when Ada was born.  (Thanks Aunt Marissa!)  Ada gets her own stem for it whenever we buy flowers.  You can find your own planter on Ebay or Etsy.  They are inexpensive and great to have on hand as gifts for new babies.

Chris was cleaning up in the back yard this weekend and found Wisteria in bloom!  We had it on our planting wish list, and there it was.  We must have missed it in August when it was done flowering and surrounded by the overgrown jungle in the back yard.  It has opened up all across the neighbor’s back shed and grown two stories up into the trees.  We can see the purple blooms from all of the back windows in the house.  Who planted it there?  The vine looks old.  Who were they?  Who planted the tiny purple violets in the yard that exactly match the ones on the old teacup that I use every morning?  Someone cared about this place a long time ago.  We are excited to uncover more about the lives that went on here before us.

cooking, Earth Day, food, geranium, gift, Mother's Day, plants, pretty packaging, recycled can, tomato can planter

I like buying groceries with beautiful packages.  It makes me happy see bright little compositions behind the cabinet doors.  In honor of Earth Day this weekend, we reused these colorful tomato cans as geranium pots.  The graphic labels are printed on and will withstand drips from a watering can.  You will need:

*Recycled Can

*Can Opener

*Geranium, or other small plant

*Potting Soil

*Small Stones or Broken Clay Pot Shards

1. Wash and dry can.

2. Turn can over and punch a series of slits on the bottom to allow for drainage.  Our holes are about half an inch long.

3. Put one inch of stones inside can.

4. Put in plant and fill in any space with potting soil.  Soil line should be half an inch from the top of can so that it will not spill out when watered.

5. Place a tray or dish underneath when watering.

*These would make sweet Earth Day or Mother’s Day gifts.

Coffee Filter Flowers

bouquet, coffee filter flowers, flower garden, food coloring, Martha Stewart, painter's tape, paper flowers, plants, watercolor paints

This was inspired by the new Martha Stewart issue.  We are ready for spring and Easter colors around here!  These flowers are made by gently folding painted coffee filters into petal shapes.  Ada liked using the paints and watching the colors bleed up the filters.  The finished flowers can be combined into a bouquet, tied onto gifts, or planted on the wall like we did.  You will need:

*Coffee Filters

*Watercolor Paints and/or Food Coloring (I used both, but kept the kids away from the messier food coloring)

*Bowls (for mixing the food coloring with water)

*Paper or Scrap Cloth Towels

*Green Pipe Cleaners

*Painters Tape (for wall hanging)

1. Separate filters into stacks of 4 to 6 each.

2. Fill bowls with a small amount of water and a few drops of food coloring.  We used about five drops in shallow water.

3. Dip the bottom edges of filter stacks in bowls and/or paint edges with watercolors.  More pigment and less water=brighter colors.  Filters can be dried and more colors added until you like your results.

4. Place filter stacks on towels to dry.

5. When stacks are still slightly damp, pinch the back center of the flower and twist all the filters together, (middle photo).  Secure with pipe cleaner and gently unfurl petals.  If you used food coloring, a bit may transfer onto your hands when flowers are wet but should stay put when dry.

6. When flowers are completely dry, make a loop of painter’s tape. Insert stem through loop vertically and stick onto the wall.

Front Stoop Plantings

Aubreita, back yard, clay pot, Columbine, cutting garden, flower garden, front stoop flowers, Lithodora, planting, plants, Salvia, spring, Viola

We are working on getting the back yard ready to use this year, but it looks like my cutting garden wish list is going to stay on paper until next year.  I am longing for flowers back there, but putting up a fence is a more practical first step.  So we decided to plant a big clay pot to brighten up the stoop instead.  We used a mix of purples and blues for our sunny spot.  You can adjust the type of plants based on your own climate and light.  This is a quick planting project with immediate results which makes it ideal for kids’ short attention spans.  If you want to do a similar arrangement you will need:

*Clay Pot.  (We used one that is 20″ high and 18″ wide at the top).

*Potting Soil

*Flowering Plants.  We used: Viola, Aubrieta, Lithodora, Columbine, and Salvia.

1. Place some rocks or broken pot shards on the bottom of the pot for drainage.  Be sure not to cover hole completely.

2. Fill 3/4 of the pot with soil.

3. Place in plants, following directions on soil tags and being careful not to overcrowd.  The top of the soil should be about 1″below pot rim so it will not spill out when watered.

4. Gently pack soil around plants and water in thoroughly.  Pick off dead flowers as they bloom to keep plants healthy and encourage more blooms.

Enjoy!
