We originally made these fish necklaces for part of our Halloween costumes.  Josie has since claimed them so I decided to post about how to make them.  We also made some individual fish for use with the play kitchen and Josie has been cooking them up all morning.  To make your own felt fish necklace you will need:

*Various Colors of Felt (We use wool felt from Wool Felt Central)

*Embroidery Thread in Contrasting Colors

*Embroidery Needle

*Stuffing

*Scissors

*Card Stock to Make Pattern

*Pencil

1. Draw fish shape on card stock and cut out.

2. Stack two sheets of the same color felt, hold fish pattern on top and carefully cut out fish shape.

3. Place a bit of stuffing inside of two fish and use blanket stitch to sew together with embroidery thread.  Older kids could do this part themselves.

4. After stitching the perimeter of the fish, put the needle up through the head and sew an X through both sides to make an eye.

5. Pass the needle and thread down to the center of the fish’s tail and leave hanging until all fish are sewn.

6. To make a necklace, use the hanging threads to sew fish head to tail.  To make individual fish, just cut the thread.

*These would make a cute garland, or the long string could be tied to a dowel to make a toy fishing pole.

Ada came up with this project.  I was going to make arms for the clothespins with the pipe cleaners and she decided they would make better clothes.  She cut out the felt blankets with her scissors and the girls used crayons to decorate the shells for beds.  To make your own you will need:

*Wooden Clothespins

*Pipe cleaners

*Felt

*Crayons

*Large Seashells

*Scissors (We used Safety Scissors)

*Permanent Marker

1. Draw eyes on the clothespin with the permanent marker.

2. Hand the clothespin over to the kids to dress.  (Help them bend the end of the pipe cleaner wire into the opening on clothespin).

3. Let kids decorate shells with crayons, and cut out blankets with safety scissors.  (Ada made sinks out of the spiral shells and beds out of the clams).

4. Store the clothespin dolls in a shoebox house or zipper pouch.

5. Enjoy some peace while the kids play with their new family.

These wool felt hearts are really reversible magnets for the fridge.  They are flat enough to put through the mail and make perfect valentines or invitations to a Valentine’s Day party.  You will need:

*Felt.  We used two colors of wool felt from Woolfeltcentral.com

*Embroidery Floss in contrasting color

*Stuffing

*Two small, strong Magnets.  (You only need one if you don’t want the heart to be reversible).  We used Tiny Mighties

*Glue

*Cardstock, or paper to make the pattern

1. Fold cardstock in half, draw half a heart along the fold. Unfold and you will have an even pattern.  Trace onto felt and cut.

2. Glue magnets on inside top of each heart cutout.  You don’t need much glue because the magnets will end up safely inside of the heart and won’t fall off.

3. Place a little stuffing on one side of the heart.  You can adjust stuffing position as you sew, and the stuffing will help prevent the strong magnets from sticking to each other.

4. Blanket stitch the hearts together.  Stuffing and magnets will be inside.  Push any stray stuffing inside as you sew.

5. Allow glue to dry.  If you are putting the heart through the mail you may want to fold it inside a note before putting it in the envelope.  We used vellum envelopes from Envelopemall.com

XOXOX!
