Chris found this sturdy wooden chair frame at a yard sale before we had children.  The seat and back needed to be remade and I have been promising a summer-ready chair for four years now.  Thanks to some baby sitting from my Super-Star Mother-in-Law the chair is finished!  The work took less than two hours to complete and only basic sewing skills.  To recover a similar chair you will need:

*Chair Frame.  (Stoop sales and flea markets are good sources and frames are usually cheap if the cloth is in rough shape).

*1-2 Yards Outdoor Fabric.  (We used some from Jo-ann Fabric).

*Heavy Nylon Thread.

*Scissors or pinking shears.

*Heavy Needle for hand-sewing.

*Sewing Machine.

1. Strip off damaged fabric, remove any staples or tacks and refinish chair frame if desired.  We didn’t need to refinish ours, but did have a lot of staples to pry out.  A flat screwdriver works well for this.

2. Measure chair and cut fabric to fit.  Every chair design will be slightly different.  For my chair I was able to slide the back fabric on, but had to hand-stitch the seat fabric in place.  Make sure you look carefully at your frame before stitching a loop closed!

3. Using the sewing machine, stitch fabric for the back into a tube shape.  I also stitched vertical seams along the back of the chair, leaving space for the wooden bars to be inserted.  This keeps the back in place nicely, but is not crucial.

4. For the seat I folded two layers of fabric for extra strength and then made a loop.  Since my seat bars weren’t open like the back, I first hemmed my edges and then used a needle and thread to sew the seat loop in place.  After stitching it is easy to rotate the loop under the chair and hide the seam.

*We found a similar chair last week at a stoop sale for me.  It was only $8 and came from the seller’s grandpa.  We are on the hunt for some cute kids chair frames, and looking forward to some lemonade and lounging in the back yard!

The weather has been tricky here the last few weeks.  The skies start blue and quickly turn to dark thunder clouds on our way out the door.  Ada got crafty on the box from our grill while she was stuck inside.  She used six rolls of tape and then kept going.  We had a bunch of the Kid Made Modern Todd Oldham tape and the $6.99 price tag was totally worth the two hours she spent constructing the fort.  Not a Box by Antoinette Portis is one of our favorite books, and great inspiration for box imaginings.  To make a tape fort of their own, your kids will need:

*Cardboard Box.  A large one for a kid-size fort, or smaller box for a stuffed animal lair.

*Paper Tape.  We used the Target tape, but colorful painter’s or washi tape also work well.  Just be sure kids can tear it by hand and they won’t need scissors.

*Glitter, Paint, Markers, Clips, Cardboard Tubes, Crayons, etc. for decorating.

1. Help open one side of the box so the child can sit inside.

2. Hand over the tape and stand back.

Rainy day saved!

Supermarket Signage Wrapping Paper

I love the graphic garish signs that supermarkets use to advertise sales.  The food colors are always slightly off, but so beautiful – (Would you really eat meat that color?)  I have plans to work them into a painting when I get the chance.  So I asked my local store if they would let me take home the big rolls of paper after the sales passed.  They were happy to share and the bright heavy paper makes perfect gift wrap.  I love how the large scale is distorted into abstraction on little packages.  I know some little boys that would be thrilled to open presents wrapped in gross-out pig feet paper.  And the produce section is always perfectly seasonal.  Delicious.

Kid Made Father’s Day T-shirt

Fabric markers and some white T’s are the ingredients for this easy project.  It is a simple gift for kids to make and the will love wrapping it up for Dad.  A portrait of Dad or the child makes the shirt extra special.  (Ada drew herself with lots of long hair at the bottom of Pappy’s shirt).  A piece of cardboard inserted into the shirt helps make a flat drawing surface and prevents marker from soaking into the back.  Be sure to set the artwork with heat before washing, per directions on fabric markers.

DIY Knitted Bear Ears

diy, diy knitting, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Halloween costume, headband, kid dress up, knitted bear ears, stockinette stitch

We made these for our Halloween costumes last year.  Ada was Goldilocks and we were the Three Bears.  Baby bear Josie had knitted ears sewn onto her wool suit and Chris and I wore these ears.  The kids now use them for dress-up and they are easy to make if you have minimal knitting skills.  You will need:

*Brown Yarn.  (I used less than half a ball of scrap for each set).  If you want two-toned ears use one color for front and one for back.

*Knitting Needles. (I used size 6)

*Stuffing

*Pipe Cleaners – Two per set

*Fabric-covered Headband

*Needle and Thread

1. Knit up ear shape in Stockinette.  (I am in no way qualified to write a knitting pattern, but this is really easy to do if you know how to increase and decrease).  I began by casting on about 10 stitches, increasing for a few rows on each side when I reached the middle of the ear and then decreasing for a few rows on each side as the ear looked to be about the right size.  I bound off with about 6 stitches at the top.  Ears will be knitted in two pieces and then sewn together.

2. Repeat above until you have four of the same pieces- two fronts and two backs.  If you are making two-toned ears you should have two of each color.

3. Sew front and back of ears together, leaving the bottom open for stuffing.

4. Bend pipe cleaner into half circle, insert into ear and trim ends so they are not sticking out.  This will keep the ears from flopping.

5. Stuff each ear.

6. Sew ears onto headband, pushing stuffing up inside as you go.

Grrrrrrrrr.

The new Todd Oldham for Target line of kids’ art supplies is in stores!  I had it on my calendar for yesterday and I think I may have been the first one to discover the pile in our local Target.  All of the Kid Made Modern pieces are under $20 and the packaging and bright colors make them perfect gifts.  I love the craft kits that designer Todd Oldham came up with: diy painted wooden blocks, board book, felt flowers…His fun aesthetic translates perfectly to kids’ products.  My mom always had a secret closet stash of gifts and I love being prepared.  Art supplies are the best!

Bloomers

Bloomers are one of my favorite baby wardrobe staples.  They are cute and comfortable and fit nicely over Josie’s big cloth diaper butt.  I modified a vintage Butterick pattern for this pair and they used less than half a yard of Liberty fabric.  I have plans to make some into longer pants, and a heavier corduroy would be perfect over tights for fall weather.  So many good options!  Here are some similar vintage patterns on Ebay.  Purl Soho is a great source for Liberty fabric, (and all around great inspiration).  Soor Ploom also has adorable bloomers if you would rather buy than DIY.

*Today is the 100th post on Domestic Space.  Thanks so much for reading and we can’t wait to share more with you!

We made these tissue paper tassels to decorate an engagement party for our friends Kristin and Linsey.  The lovely weather and people made the day so much fun.  I spotted tassels in an adorable booth at Playtime in March and it reminded me I’d been wanting to make some myself.  The Playtime tassels were from Confetti System – an amazing and inspiring site if you don’t already know.  To make our own version we followed these directions posted by Chelsea on The Sweetest Occasion.  Thank you ladies!  The only changes we made to the concise directions were to use two sheets of tissue instead of one and to tie the twine around our tassel ends.  The process of cutting and twisting is so simple and completely satisfying.  I love a project that transforms the simple into the magical!

Pinwheels made from vintage fabric for headband crowns.  I found a big box of cut circles at a flea market and the prints were perfectly bright and preserved.  I remember a quilt made from these at my Gram’s house when I was little.  Yesterday Chris took the kids for the day and left me to a quiet house and NPR Podcasts and production.  So lovely!  I am working during the kids’ naps and between art projects to get lots of crowns done before Renegade in June.  I love a project!
