Sometimes it just takes a simple $8 package of clay to make Ada happy, and to make my life a little easier for a couple of hours while she carefully unwraps packages and makes sculptures with scissors and string and pipe cleaners.  I can completely relate to her excitement over new supplies.  The potential is so endless!  Last month Katie from Katie’s Pencil Box had an amazing post about her favorite online office supply store Present and Correct.  (If you haven’t visited Katie’s beautiful blog, you should).  I am making my list of supplies to work into Christmas gifts this year.

Josie and I made jam today from some of our 20 pounds of apples picked this weekend. The house smelled like apple pie and the sun was streaming through the kitchen windows as the fence builders were busy outside. (We are finally fixing up our back yard and the work from just two days has already made the house so much brighter!  More about the fence building soon).  Please don’t judge me for the ugly kitchen in the photos…It is on the list of projects.  This recipe was adapted from the Ball Blue Book.  To make your own Apple Maple Jam you will need:

*12 Half-Pint Canning Jars with Seals and Lids

*15 Cups of Peeled, Cored and Chopped Apples (We used a combination of Cortland, Gala and Yellow Delicious)

*6 Cups Sugar (We used Raw Cane Sugar)

*1 Cup Maple Syrup

*2 teaspoons Cinnamon

*1 teaspoon Allspice

*1 teaspoon Nutmeg

*1/2 teaspoon Cloves

*Seeds Scraped from 1 Vanilla Bean

1. Prepare apples and combine all ingredients in large pot.  (This is my favorite apple peeler).

2. Slowly bring to a boil.

3. Stir frequently and cook until jam is thickened to your liking. (Ours took about an hour).

4. Remove from heat and spoon into washed hot jars, leaving 1/4″ headspace.

5. Carefully wipe rims and screw on two-piece caps.

6. Slide jars into warming water and boil for 10 minutes.

7. Remove from water using a jar lifter and allow to cool.

8. Jar tops will depress as they cool.  Any that don’t should be reprocessed or eaten within a few days.

9. We decorated circles of paper, carefully unscrewed lids and placed the circles on top of the sealed tops.  Screw lids can be replaced to hold the papers in place.  Be sure to label each jar with the contents and date.

**This jam is yummy warmed on vanilla ice cream, pancakes or PB&Js.  Store unopened jars in a cool dry place and eat within one year.  Enjoy!

We started fall off with apple picking and antique shops this weekend.  Chris found this giant pumpkin at Sun High Orchards after we picked 20 pounds (!) of apples.  I am excited to perfect a maple apple jam recipe with them this week.  The girls went on their first pony rides at the farm and Josie did not want to share her pony with any of the other kids waiting in line.  I scored a pair of vintage juice glasses decorated with fall leaves (for $.99 each !).  Ada found this crown at the last antique shop and decided it could live on the pumpkin when not on her own head.  There is officially a chill in the air today.  Welcome Autumn!

We have a collection of various wooden block sets, but these Uncle Goose numbers are my favorite lately.  We keep them in a big antique yellow ware bowl so they are easy for the kids to get to and clean up.  I love the colors and the carved details and their weight.  This set also has a rocket ship, skyscraper and circus on its sides.  There is something perfect and timeless about a child playing with blocks.  There are theories that block play leads to better understanding of language structure and spatial relations.  But I love to watch the girls imagine worlds and structures without bounds as they stack blocks.

The tomatoes from our CSA are especially good this year. I feel like I haven’t had such good tomatoes in years. I love tomatoes that straddle two seasons – collecting the sun of summer but not ripening until the air feels a bit cooler. Some days I long for our own vegetable plot and other days I am thankful for someone else doing the hard work of tending the garden. Tomatoes don’t last long at our house. (I had to edit out some thieving little hands from the photo). Our favorite way to enjoy tomatoes are in this sandwich: Bourbon Wheat Bread from Scratch Bread, some good cheese, thin slices of our pickles, and thick slices of tomatoes. Yum!

I love this Neisa Crosland wallpaper. We searched for it for a long time and finally found it at Walnut Wallpaper in LA.  (Walnut has since stopped selling Crosland’s papers, but have an amazing selection of other beauties).   I was pregnant with Ada at the time, and we slept in the living room while we tracked down the perfect paper.  I wanted something that would be both calming and complex enough not to get boring.  I initially wanted to use Crosland’s Anenome which I had fallen in love with from a Miu Miu ad.  Chris and I finally agreed on Merlin and decided to place it on one wall and match the paint.  The mix of subtle metallic and spring colors makes me happy.  We loved how it turned out, and I am dreaming of more papered rooms.  We found remnants on top of old plaster downstairs and I would love to match it.  What is your favorite wallpaper?

*Surfboards.

*Ivin’s Famous Spiced Wafers.  (I got these boxes purely for the packaging with no idea of the contents, but they ended up being delicious spicy  ginger snaps.  They are perfect for making mini ice cream sandwiches).

*Bright Plastic Boats, Nags Head.

Have a lovely weekend!

Chris came home one morning in Cape May with some of this Fralinger’s salt water taffy.  The vintage packaging alone made me ecstatic.  This video tells the story of the origin of Salt Water Taffy and the family business that keeps the original alive today.  The taffy flavors include: Banana, Chocolate, Lemon, Licorice, Lime, Molasses, Molasses Mint, Orange, Peach, Peanut Butter, Peppermint, Root Beer, Spearmint, Strawberry, Teaberry, and Vanilla.  Hooray for the perfect vacation souvenir!

The beach at Nag’s Head, NC was covered in tiny shells.  The kids spent one morning gluing collected shells onto little wooden picture frames.  We used our mini Fuji camera to add a photo.  Ada decided this one was my birthday gift, and it was just what I wanted.  To make your own shell frame you will need:

*Small Shells

*Wooden Picture Frame

*Elmer’s Glue

*Photograph

1. Wash sand from shells and dry thoroughly.

2. Have children glue shells to frame.

3. Glue in your favorite photograph and allow to dry.

4. Bring home the beach.

Baked, Brooklyn, Cape May Ferry, Cape May NJ, Fairway, family vacation, Nags Head NC, travel, vacation with kids, victorian mansions

We just got back from two lovely weeks of beach vacation.  We have never gone on family vacation for that amount of time and it was pretty perfect.  We went to Nags Head, NC with family for the first week where we had Nan and Pappy and cousins to entertain the kids.  The second week we drove and took the ferry to Cape May, NJ to spend time with five families that we have know since Ada was three months old.  Cape May is a beach town full of beautiful Victorian mansions and bed and breakfasts.  We were right on the beach in Nags Head and the kids spent most of the days in the sand and warm water.  Our Cape May house was a five bedroom Victorian two blocks from the ocean.  We spent a lot of time on the porch rocking chairs with the kids playing around us.  All of us are back home now, happy to be back in Brooklyn and excited about the change in the summer air since we’ve been gone.  We are trying to hold on to that easy summer feeling as long as we can.  We made a run to Fairway and Baked yesterday and I was reminded how much I love it here!
*Drying clothes on the porch.  (Inside out so the sun doesn’t fade colors).

*Pink Nags Head sunrise.  (We woke Ada up early for it and walked on the beach when it was light).

*Morning surrey ride on the boardwalk in Wildwoods, NJ.
What was your best summer vacation?
