It is hard to believe our little Josie is already two!  It seems like just the other day when Chris and I were planning our last weekend alone and my water broke two weeks early.  Josie has been sweet and kind and funny ever since her unexpected arrival.  Thank you for always making us smile Ms. Josie.  We had a little party this weekend and celebrated the actual day yesterday with cupcakes and berries and a pair of footie pjs from Daddy.

* Party Decorations.  Balloons from Bargain Balloons and silver and white lanterns from Tail of the Yak.  Heart Garland How-To Here.

*Coconut Cake from Ina Garten’s yummy recipe.  Beeswax number candle from Clothes  Pony/ Dandelion Toys in Fort Collins, CO – The Best Toy Store!  The Jadeite was an amazing Craigslist score.

*Bathroom hyacinth in a favorite Swanky Swig.

*Josie’s yearly Birthday Crown.  Cape by Wovenplay.

*Gift Bag Contents.  (I used to be anti-giftbag.  We never had these when I little, but kids love them and Ada insisted on making these).  Straws from Shop Sweet Lulu, mini fans and spirals from Pearl River Trading ,tape from Target.

*Cherry Vanilla Birthday Ice Cream.

Happy Birthday Big Girl!

Flea Market Finds: Wall Sconce

We have been searching for a sconce for our downstairs hallway for a while.  The fixture that came with the house was so awful it landed in the trash before I could get a ‘before’ picture.  (It involved some orange cubes that looked like Legos badly hot-glued around a bulb).  We found this wall sconce a couple of weekends ago at this shop in Saugerties, NY.  We usually hold out for a major bargain when we shop for house things, since we have so many things on our list.  This light was less expensive than city prices, but not as cheap as we usually go for.  We decided to buy it anyway and Chris hung it up as soon as we got home.  It turned out to be perfect for the spot and I am so happy we found it.  We are trying a new method around here: Instead of keeping our finds boxed up in a closet until our house is perfect, we have begun hanging up lights on our less-than-perfect ceilings.  It is nice to enjoy things now even if the plaster isn’t what we want it to be.   Some day our renovations will match the fixtures, but for now we are mixing perfect with not-so-perfect and getting on with living in an old house.

You can find your own vintage and antique wall sconces here on Etsy and here on Ebay.

A Few Small Repairs

Wovenplay, my very favorite children’s clothing company had a sample sale on Valentine’s day last week.  (Such a nice Valentine!)  Chris does not understand purposefully paying money for something with a hole cut out of it.  But Wovenplay’s pieces are so beautiful – like little pieces of art-  that the small price tag of a sample is well worth a few small repairs.  I added some vintage green paillettes to the cape to cover a screen-printed ink smudge.  The triangle of polka dot fabric was once a Marni dress pocket.   The bibbed jumper was not flawed, but will likely end up dyed after a few wears.  (Light colors don’t usually last too long around my messy beasts).  Josie will wear the cape for her upcoming birthday party, and I am counting the days until warm weather for the other pieces to get their turn.  Thank you Wovenplay!

Crayons For Little Hands

CrayonsThere is nothing quite as perfect as a pristine box of Crayolas, but little hands tend to snap the thin crayons quickly.  Josie will sit for an hour peeling the paper wrappers off of Ada’s crayons, (thus instigating a big fight).  This is our little kid crayon box – the shapes and sizes work better for smaller hands and they are all less breakable than the classics.

*Crayon Rings  ($5.99 for 6)

*Short Crayons (Similar to ours – $5.99 for 12)

*Stubby Crayons (Similar to ours – $7.99 for 18)

*Animal Crayons ($11.49 for 12)

*Crayon Necklace ($10.50)

GiftsArt supplies are one of my favorite gifts for kids.  I try to keep a supply on hand for birthday gifts and moments of desperation.  These Kid Made Modern art supplies by Todd Oldham for Target occupy a large section in our emergency party box.  The quality is great and I love the Kid Made Modern packaging and smart, thoughtful art kits.  This Construction Zone block of paper has lots of great colors and patterns and different weights of paper.  The Mini Colored Pencils are perfect for little hands and the colors are beautiful.  I recently added these paper tapes from the Target office section to our arsenal.  The tapes come in packs of four and are $4 per pack.  My kids can spend hours tearing and sticking paper tape (exhibit A here).  It is good to be prepared.

MagicGarden1MagicGarden2MagicGarden3Do you remember these?  We used to get smaller versions when we were kids, but I’d never seen one quite so elaborate until I found this at Pearl River.  This Mystical Garden by Toysmith has cardboard trees, grass and a mountain to assemble before the mystery liquid is poured into the base.  (This assembly is best done by an adult).  Our crystals formed within the hour and were done growing within 10 hours.  The mountain really looked like it was growing snow and the trees bloomed cherry blossoms.  Kids should not touch the crystals or liquid, but these are pretty amazing to watch grow on a shelf.  The small price tag makes this Mystical Garden a fun party favor or add-on gift for kids.  Magic.

I need to use tricks to get Ada to wear winter clothes.  These tricks usually involve the color pink, but she loves this scarf and will wear it without a fuss.  I mentioned this pattern briefly last winter, but it is that time of year again.  The Polar Bear Scarf is such an easy project that there is still time to make one up before Christmas morning.  I used this scarf pattern pattern by Pat Feeley for High Country Knitwear, available for download for $1.  I modified the pattern slightly and used a cashmere blend yarn to make it super soft.

Here are some more super-cute kids’ knits:

*Abbey from Aesthetic Outburst posted about these adorable hedgehog mittens, available as a kit from from Morehouse Farm Knits.  Morehouse Farms has more Critter Knits here.

*Elephant Scarf Elephant Scarf at Acorn Toys is soft and friendly.

*Sweet William has a sweet and warm alpaca pullover by Oeuf with bunny ears here.

Despite the 65 degree day we had here yesterday, cooler weather is on its way.  This is one of my favorite knit hats for kids.  It is from the Lyalya Hoodie ABC Pattern, available from her Etsy store here.  (The pattern provides directions for adult, baby and child sizes- hence the ABC).  The hoodie is simple to make up and keeps little necks warm in the wind.  We used this amazing yarn from my favorite yarn and craft shop Brooklyn General to make ours.  The cashmere is soft and warm and lightweight and this hat will get passed down from big to little sister.

Vintage Finds: Globe Banks

5 gallon water jug, antique shop, Brooklyn NY, Ebay, geography kids, globe, globe bank, kids saving money, Travel with kids, vintage globe

We picked up this little pair of vintage globe banks at a Brooklyn antique shop this weekend for $10 each.  These banks are small- about 5″ tall and a good start to an inexpensive collection.  Ebay has quite a few globe banks listed here.  I love that they combine saving money and geography.  Banks used to hand these sort of globes out to kids to promote saving, (presumably in the institution stated once the globe was packed with pennies).  Our girls usually put extra change in our big glass jug by the front door.  Maybe these globe banks will be the start of their savings to travel the world.
